JERRY PISSED. HIPPIES
FRUSTRATED
It has been several years since Jerry Garcia’s death, in that time many
of his followers have clearly lost their way, some decided to quit the
circuit all together and get jobs in corporate America. Others joined up
with Phish and after their demise *sigh* some even followed Dave
Matthews Band. But the situation reached a low last year when two thirds
of all 18-25 year olds surveyed reported that Jerry Garcia must
certainly be the other dude in the Ben & Jerry’s franchise. Up in
heaven, for obvious reasons, the real Jerry was pissed. Not even much of
an ice cream fan much less a CEO of a top grossing ice cream chain,
Jerry was nonplussed about being associated solely with frozen delights.
This angry attitude up in the sky caused quite a few problems here on
earth, especially in the jam band circuit. Nowhere is this more obvious
than in the music heard on the newest Gang Wizard LP, “Why Is There A
God.” Gang Wizard, as well known for their bong rips as their bluesy
guitar riffs has strongly felt the angry presence of the Head Dead Head.
An astral communication link with Jerry was for a long time one of the
most important tools in defining the Gang Wizard sound. Guitarist Head
McFeathers has long used universal vibrations to tune his axe, but with
Jerry mad, there is a real lack of good vibrations in the universe. Head
reports, “I’ve been totally unable to tune since Jerry started rumbling
up there, all I get is this crazy detuned stuff.” Another side-effect is
that without Jerry’s good vibes in the sky “jamming” just isn’t the
same. Head tells us, “Like we start playing and this evil stuff starts
coming out, we can’t even help it. But you know what’s really weird is
that all the old hippies dig it. I guess cuz like the sound is like the
void that Jerry left in our lives, you know what I mean?” Nonetheless,
they’ve soldiered on, playing shows up and down the west coast and
releasing records, like “Why Is There A God.” The record is a true
example of how a band can triumph over adversity and come out ahead. In
fact “Why Is There A God” has gained Gang Wizard a whole new set of fans
in the “Underground” or “Alternative” Rock scene. Head concedes, “No one
knows when Jerry’s gonna cheer up and rain the good vibes, but at least
people are still grooving to us, you know.”
